Bodhisattvas ~
A Bodhisattva is a being whose path is the attainment of enlightenment, not only for oneself, but for all living creatures. When a Bodhisattva reaches the seventh stage of spiritual development, one becomes transcendent or Mahasattva. Although the Bodhisattva has then achieved deliverance from the cycle of rebirth, compassion compels the Mahasattva to voluntarily stay in the existing world in order to pursue the redemption of all beings, destroying the burden of karma for others.

The most acknowledged representation of Mahavattva is Avaloketesvara, of whom there are 108 manifestations. The mantra Om Mani Padma Hum is recited with every turn of the prayer wheel and is devoted to Avalokitesvara as the savior of distress and redeemer of negative karma.

Sadaksari, a peaceful manifestation of Avaloketesvaara, is known as ‘Lord of the Six Syllables’, which pertain to the six syllables of ‘Om Mani Padme Hum’, the mantra of compassion. In his right hand he holds a mala to count the number of times the mantra is spoken; in the left hand his holds the lotus of absolute purity. He holds the magic jewel Cintamani in front of his chest and his spiritual father, Amitabha, is seated above his head.
